Return of the Vikings: Nordic leadership - Henley Business School Suomessa

MasterClass: Return of the Vikings – Nordic leadership in times of extreme change

The Nordic countries are trending internationally and taking the lead in many different categories. What is it that makes us so successful?

Culturally, politically, philosophically, the Nordic countries have been at the forefront of much that is new and interesting in the Western world. Today, they also draw attention to their leadership approach and business practices. Year after year, the Nordic countries rank first when it comes to being the happiest people on earth. Dozens of books are written about Danish ‘hygge’ and Swedish ‘fika’. Is this just a trend or is there something more going on?

Chris Shern, Managing Director of Henley Business School Denmark, is an American based in the Nordics who has worked for more than two decades in truly Nordic organisations. This outsider-on-the-inside perspective has given him a unique opportunity to reflect upon the qualities of Nordic leadership. Chris has interviewed a diverse range of leaders with a very different perspective on Nordic leadership to support and complement his own experiences and conclusions. He has summarised his findings in the book ‘Return of the Vikings’, which was released during spring 2018.

In this MasterClass, we’ll explore the roots and characteristics of Nordic leadership, what is meant by extreme change and why the Nordic leadership approach is better equipped than others to meet the challenges of a chaotic future. Mika Anttonen, Chairman of the Board at St1, who was one of the many interviewed for Chris’ book will join us and provide a real-life example of Nordic leadership.

Leader in spotlight: Pia Aaltonen-Forsell, CFO

  • 7 heinä 2023
Pia Aaltonen-Forsell is CFO of Outokumpu, the largest stainless steal producer in Europe. She does not have the most obvious background for a CFO: she is Master of Social Sciences in economics. She thinks that her background is a great asset, since as a CFO you need to understand the economy in general, not just business.
