Master Class: When hierarchy meets a start-up mindset – Leadership insights from NATO
What can be done when different world views or practices of leadership collide and risk sustainable performance? This Master Class that bridges practice, research, and learning, will focus on the multi-layered demands managers are facing and how a multifaceted approach to leadership is the answer; an answer that goes beyond what many of us have learned and perfected as leaders. This class will also highlight the potential difficulties that we all face and will include a call-to-action for leaders to self-examine, continuously advance skills, learn from each other, and steer the boat through the rapid currents of change and unpredictability.
Dr. Manfred Boudreaux-Dehmer, CIO, NATO will explore from a practice perspective how the leadership tenet of ‘planning, directing, and controlling’ is no longer fit-for-purpose in an era that is marked by rapid change and unpredictability. We are challenged to fundamentally transform the notion of leadership. The job description of today’s leaders of relevance is therefore a tall order: We need to be visionaries, architects, coaches, and road workers all at the same time. All this takes place while the leader ensures an inclusive, welcoming, and challenging environment that simultaneously zeroes in on customer needs.
This session explores these challenges further and suggests practical approaches that may be helpful. The contributions are informed by Manfred’s transition from a 30+ year IT manager in the private industry in Europe, US, Canada, and Latin America to being the Chief Information Officer of NATO in Brussels. Spoiler alert: Very large public-sector organizations operate very differently as opposed to small and agile private-sector electronics and computer companies.
Professor Bernd Vogel will lead on challenges for leadership in culture change and how to enable sustainable
leadership engagement. The session shares how to enable a multi-directional way of leading with others and why purpose matters as glue. We look at what the latest and evergreen research indicates and how you notice if you maintain your firms’ attention on sustainable culture work and why a knowing-doing-gap in leadership matters.

The sign in for the Master Class will begin at 16:00 in Restaurant Sipuli’s Kanava Hall on the 3rd floor, where coffee will be served. After signing in, move to the end of the hall towards the Banquet Hall where the event is held. The break will be held in the Kanava Hall, where drinks and cocktail snacks are served. The cloakroom will open at 15:30 and can be found on the 1st floor when entering Restaurant Sipuli. The cloakroom is free.

Professor Bernd Vogel, Professor in Leadership, Henley Business School
Professor Dr Bernd Vogel is a Professor in Leadership, Founding Director of Henley Centre for Leadership UK & Henley Centre for Leadership Africa, and Research Division Lead at Henley Business School, University of Reading. Currently he is a Visiting professor at the University of Johannesburg and holds an Honorary Chair Professorship in Organizational Leadership at Woxsen University, India.
Bernd is working for more than 20 years with global companies, business schools and universities. He bridges academia with practice and assists humans and organisations in life-long leadership learning journeys that help them to develop and transform lives, organisations, and societal causes.
Bernd’s expertise focuses on strategic leadership to mobilise and maintain healthy organizational energy and performance, healthy and performing senior management teams, future of work and leadership, manager transitions to senior roles, organization-wide leadership capability, developing leadership and followership capability, multi-directional leadership for transformation, change and culture, leadership development, and executive coaching.
Bernd publishes in top-tier academic journals, authored and edited several books, and contributes regularly to global media.
Dr. Manfred Boudreaux-Dehmer, CIO, NATO
Dr. Manfred Boudreaux-Dehmer is the inaugural Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He commenced his position at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium on September 1, 2021. His principal responsibility is to realize the Allies’ vision for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in support of NATO’s purpose to guarantee freedom and security for its 31 member nations. Under the mandate of the North Atlantic Council, and under the delegated authority of the NATO Secretary General, he is tasked with facilitating ICT coherence across NATO’s 50+ civil and military bodies with 25,000 users. He also performs the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) function as the Single Point of Authority for cybersecurity.
From 2010 until 2021, Dr. Boudreaux-Dehmer directed all global computing and information technology systems for Sierra Wireless in Vancouver, Canada. The company provides Internet of Things (IoT) solutions that empower businesses to thrive in the interconnected global economy. Prior to assuming this role, he spent eight years at Hewlett-Packard (HP) IT in Business Intelligence and Strategy & Planning leadership roles. From 1993 to 2002, he oversaw Supply Chain systems at Compaq’s Latin America Division in Houston, Texas and São Paulo, Brazil. Prior to that, he supported material planning processes at Compaq’s European Headquarters in Munich, Germany and Gorinchem, The Netherlands.
Dr. Boudreaux-Dehmer has an MBA from Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, USA. He also holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Business and Management Research and a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Reading, UK.
