Key preparation for high-quality coaching conversations

Dialogue has been described as the ‘art of thinking together’. It is an interpersonal mode capable of developing shared ownership of solutions and plans through the respectful exchange of personal viewpoints and open questioning of assumptions. For many coaches, being in dialogue with clients has become an ongoing aspiration. But dialogue can be elusive, requiring well-honed micro skills.

This presentation will argue that it also needs deliberate and disciplined preparation. A model is outlined to show how the management of four energy reserves (physiological, cognitive, emotional and spirit) are critical to facilitating dialogue with others. Implications for practice will be explored using examples.

The speaker

Dr Gordon Spence - Henley Business School Finland

Dr Gordon Spence is an experienced academic and practicing psychologist. He is currently Head of Students and Program Director of the Masters of Business Coaching, Sydney Business School at the University of Wollongong. He is a lecturer, applied researcher and author, with interests in optimal functioning, mindfulness, employee engagement and positive leadership. In addition, Gordon has 15 years experience providing executive/workplace coaching, training and consulting services to a range of organisations. He is also a past co-chair of the Science Advisory Council, Institute of Coaching (Harvard University), and co-editor of the Sage Handbook of Coaching (2017).
